A little workout nostalgia — I was just thinking back to when I first started exercising, thanks in large part to my dad. Outside of required gym class or a sports team, I was trying to remember when fitness became important to me, and landed right at about eighth grade.
Around the end of middle school, beginning of high school, I started to pay attention to other girls and the way my own body was shaping up. At the same time, I was being exposed to new ways to work out. During high school, I was offered the choice of a regular P.E. class, or a semester of yoga and Pilates. I chose the latter and have been hooked ever since. Additionally, my dad used to ask me along to his training sessions at the gym, where working with his trainer helped to give me a better understanding of fitness and what I could do on my own to stay healthy.
Since then, I've made a conscious decision to keep myself fit — a lifestyle choice that I attribute to such a great introduction to working out during my early high school years. Obviously fitness is important at any age, but I'm curious, when did you first get into a fitness routine?
Temperley London
I grew up always incorporating physical fitness in my life, from recess in elementary school, to walking/playing outside with my friends and family on weekends, to high school P.E. classes. In college, I continued to exercise, but it wasn't until I noticed I had put on some weight that I had to adjust my diet and also ramp up my fitness regime. Running and Pilates were my favorites then, and I still continue them today with mostly beneficial results.
1I said elementary school, because I've been playing soccer since then, but I haven't really been super dedicated to fitness until about a year ago. Now I work out 5-6 times a week, between soccer, running, turbo kick boxing, pilates, and other things! I love it, and when I force myself to take a day off, I miss it. And now I'm running my first half marathon in February...in high school I thought 2 miles was long!
2Throughout my childhood my mom always had me in some type of sport. I settled in to soccer and stayed with that until, well, college even though I still played on some rec teams in college and after college.
But I first started using the term "I work out" in about my third year of college. That's when I realized that a few casual pick up soccer games every semester + eating lots of bad food and consuming a lot of beer doesn't equal healthy.
I've been working out since then without any breaks.
